Finding Stability With Workplace Wellness

Workplace wellness initiatives may not eliminate uncertainty, but they can help us navigate challenging times and bring a sense of calm amidst the chaos. Learn ways to support employees in today's blog.

Certainty, consistency, and stability are what our brains crave. As humans, we look for patterns, finding comfort and safety in knowing what to expect. We are continually challenged by the reality that change is perpetual—especially in today’s workplace, where uncertainty is fueled by a shifting political landscape, potential layoffs, possible workplace restructuring, and economic shifts. Additionally, Gallup recently reported that both employee engagement and well-being have declined over the past year. The research points to workforce changes as a contributor, leading to greater stress and less work–life satisfaction. When change feels nonstop, it can take a toll on well-being. Workplace wellness can serve as an anchor to provide stability in times of uncertainty.

In today’s workplace climate of constant change and unpredictability, intentional wellness initiatives—such as stress management resources, resilience training, and well-being strategies—play a critical role in helping employees navigate uncertainty. Yet for these efforts to truly make a lasting impact, they must be grounded in a psychologically safe culture. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), low psychological safety in the workplace makes employees 2.3 times more likely to experience increased stress and tension, and ten times more likely to describe their workplace as “toxic.” Such environments contribute to chaos and instability and are among the strongest predictors of employee turnover. When paired with a culture of psychological safety, strategic wellness initiatives can help reduce fear and anxiety—and even lower the risk of burnout.

While employers can’t control all the chaos in the world, there are meaningful steps they can take to help create a sense of calm and stability.

Communicate Often

Communication is foundational to the success of any wellness initiative, and it becomes even more critical during times of instability and uncertainty. Normalize proactive and regular communication by allowing both formal and informal opportunities for employees to ask questions and check in. In addition to sharing what is known—such as why change is happening and how it affects the organization and its people—leaders should acknowledge what is unknown; address fears openly; and be comfortable saying, “I don’t know.” This approach can deepen trust and rapport and offer reassurance during times of high stress and uncertainty.

Highlight Resilience and Stress Management Strategies

Highlight wellness initiatives that support employee resilience and stress management to help employees navigate the workday with greater ease. Consider strategies such as the following:

  • Provide noise-canceling headphones
  • Encourage physical activity breaks
  • Offer healthy food options
  • Share mindfulness tools and resources
  • Create opportunities for relaxation, such as enjoying calming music or a quiet space.

Promote Healthy Habits Inside and Outside of Work

Empower employees to prioritize their health and well-being beyond the workplace. During times of heightened stress, it’s easy to put healthy habits to the side. However, when employees adopt healthy habits consistently—including getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying physically active—they’re better equipped to manage stress and maintain resilience in all aspects of life.

Inform Employees of Their Benefits and Resources

According to the APA, job insecurity and financial concerns are leading some individuals to avoid mental health care. To help break this cycle, ensure employees are fully informed about all available benefits, including mental health resources such as employee assistance programs (EAPs), coaching services, and other supportive tools, as well as how to access them. Just as importantly, help employees recognize when they may need support and know where to turn for help when they do.

Workplace wellness initiatives may not eliminate uncertainty, but they can help us navigate challenging times and bring a sense of calm amidst the chaos.
