From Doing to Being: The Science and Method for Sustaining Healthy Lifestyles

Thursday, February 12, 2026

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM ET

Despite the time of year or level of commitment, most people quickly discontinue after initiating a change in lifestyle behaviors. For health and wellness professionals, the key to helping clients and employees adopt these behaviors in sustainable ways has also remained elusive. Frustratingly, even when our efforts are theoretically and scientifically supported, they still often fail to help our clients achieve lasting changes. A key problem is that when people start a new, healthier way of eating or decide to exercise more, they often frame these behavior-change projects as things they “do.” However, there’s an exciting growing body of research suggesting that when people perceive their lifestyle behaviors as supporting their core identity—as ways to be themselves—they are more likely to sustain them.

In this story-based workshop, Dr. Michelle Segar, author of No Sweat and The Joy Choice, will discuss research and methods for helping people close the gap between “doing” lifestyle behaviors and “being themselves” through lifestyle behaviors. Health and wellness professionals who attend will get hands-on opportunities, tactics and tools to help guide clients (and themselves!) toward this strategic mindset shift. Physical activity will be featured as the behavioral protagonist of this workshop, but there will be room to discuss and consider how the featured content and tools can also be applied across self-care behaviors and behavior change contexts. Attendees will leave this session inspired and equipped with new insights and tools to put that knowledge to work.
